The Galleries.

The sculptures depicted in the eight galleries below form part of the Spirits & Stone Collection. Each sculpture is hand-carved and singularly unique, for even if the artist wishes to reproduce an original form it can never be exactly replicated as every piece of stone has its own character, lines and grain. Each gallery is laid out in a grid format. If you are interested in a particular sculpture you can describe it to the Curator, noting the name of the gallery, and ‘gallery tile’ (i.e. Row 2/Picture 2). If you click on the images in the Catalogue Gallery you will see different aspects of the sculpture and a description. Inquire about any pieces you come across on this website, many of them may be viewed in person by scheduling a private appointment.

Enjoy your stroll through The Galleries, and be sure to listen for the whispers of the spirits in the stones…

“Michelangelo’s spiritual ideal, of the individual form waiting to be released from the individual stone, is even more apparent in Shona sculpture than in most of Michelangelo’s own marbles.”
